Gerald Butts Named Vice Chairman of Eurasia Group

23 July 2020

NEW YORK, 23 July – Eurasia Group is pleased to announce that Gerald Butts, previously principal secretary to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has been appointed vice chairman of Eurasia Group, effective 1 July. Butts will work closely with Eurasia Group CEO Maziar Minovi on strategic initiatives across all areas of the firm and provide clients with his deep expertise on climate and sustainable finance, trade and other global negotiations, political campaigns, and artificial intelligence. He initially joined the firm in March as a senior advisor and helped launch Eurasia Group's expanded coverage of global climate policy and sustainable finance.

“Gerald's wealth of experience comes at a time when geopolitics has never had more market-moving relevance,” said Ian Bremmer, president of Eurasia Group, the world's leading political risk research firm. “His background negotiating international policy, running national campaigns, and guiding institutions in both government and the private sector will be a tremendous asset to our firm, and our clients who rely on us for sharp analysis in a world increasingly marked by volatility and disruption.”

“In just a few months, Gerald has substantially broadened our impact by working with our expanding Energy, Climate & Resources practice and enhancing our global macro coverage,” said Minovi. “As the global economy navigates the challenges of climate change and the entire world grapples with coronavirus-induced shocks, we are grateful that our clients and colleagues will benefit from Gerald's talent and keen understanding of geopolitics.”

Butts served as a top aide to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and designed the successful strategies for the Liberal Party's national election campaigns in 2015 and 2019. Alongside Trudeau, Butts was responsible for providing executive direction on the development, implementation, and communication of the government's agenda, including overseeing economic policy, negotiating the Paris climate accord, creating Canada's first national climate change plan, and helping manage relations with the US administrations of Barack Obama and Donald Trump, as well as in the renegotiation of NAFTA.

“Since joining Eurasia Group, I've had the great pleasure to collaborate with an extraordinary team of experts delivering world-class analysis,” said Butts. “I'm excited to deepen my relationship with the firm as we continue developing innovative tools to help people make sense of a turbulent world characterized by unprecedented challenges as well as opportunities.”

Prior to his work with the prime minister, Butts was policy secretary and principal secretary to the premier of the province of Ontario. He also served as CEO of WWF-Canada.

Butts holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from McGill University. (Full bio)
