Eurasia Group's Ian Bremmer Returns to Columbia Faculty,
Will Teach Course on Geopolitical Risk in SIPA's MIA Program

Ian Bremmer, the president and founder of Eurasia Group, a leading global political risk research and consulting firm, will teach a new course, Applied Geopolitics, in spring 2020 for students enrolled in SIPA's flagship Master of International Affairs program.

The course will provide students with an interdisciplinary foundation for identifying and assessing political risks and for managing and mitigating such risks across markets and sectors. Students will utilize concepts and techniques introduced in the class to forecast potential outcomes of real-world risks that occur during the course.

“We are very fortunate to again welcome Ian Bremmer to teach a course at SIPA,” said Dean Merit E. Janow. “His extensive expertise in the analysis of political risk and markets and his lively and informed commentary will be of benefit to our students and broader SIPA community.”

“I am delighted to be returning to teach at SIPA, where I have consistently been impressed by the academic rigor and students' commitment to grappling with the critical challenges facing the globe,” said Bremmer.

Bremmer has dedicated his career, he often says, to helping business leaders, policy makers, students, and the general public make sense of the world around them. In 2017, he founded GZERO Media to provide intelligent and engaging coverage of global affairs.

In addition to his work at Eurasia Group, Bremmer is a frequent speaker, television commentator, and writer on global geopolitics for Time magazine and other leading publications. He is also the host of GZERO World with Ian Bremmer, which airs weekly on public television stations across the United States, and the author of ten books, including the New York Times bestseller Us vs. Them: The Failure of Globalism (2018) which examines the rise of populism across the world.

Bremmer is the Harold J. Newman Distinguished Fellow in Geopolitics at the Asia Society Policy Institute, and serves as an advisor or board member for several additional organizations.

Bremmer, who will serve as an adjunct professor, taught at SIPA most recently in 2012. He holds a doctorate in political science from Stanford University.
