Eurasia Group welcomes Dominic Barton as Strategic Counselor

Eurasia Group
26 October 2022

NEW YORK, 26 October 2022 – Eurasia Group is pleased to announce that Dominic Barton, former global managing director of McKinsey and Canadian Ambassador to China, is joining the firm as a Strategic Counselor. Barton will leverage his unique insight into global markets and extensive business and diplomatic acumen in Asia to build upon Eurasia Group's offerings.

The Uganda-born Barton brings both a diplomat's and a business leader's perspectives to his new role. As ambassador to China, Barton led Canada's efforts to secure the release of two Canadians accused of espionage by Beijing in a years-long standoff involving Canada, China and the US over the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou. He spent more than three decades at McKinsey, including as global managing partner, and several years leading the offices in Korea and Shanghai as Asia Chairman.

A prolific writer on the role of business in society, Barton has authored more than 80 articles and co-authored four books including Dangerous Markets: Managing in Financial Crises (2002) and China Vignettes: An Inside Look at China (2007). A Rhodes Scholar, Barton has been an active participant in international forums and a member of multiple boards, including the current chairmanship of Rio Tinto. He is also the chair of LeapFrog Investments, and has served as an adviser for groups such as the Asian Development Bank. Barton has also served on the board of the Malala Fund and been involved in the UN initiative HeForShe, a campaign focused on advancing global gender equality. Find his full bio here.

As Strategic Counselor, Barton will provide advice on the firm's strategic direction, engage with key clients, and contribute to analytic work, particularly on China and Asia broadly. He will also develop new commercial opportunities and advise on the firm's internal business strategy.

“We are thrilled to have Dominic on board and for all that he brings to our clients – targeted expertise and a proven track record of getting seemingly impossible things done,” said Maziar Minovi, Eurasia Group's Chief Executive Officer. “And as our commercial footprint continues to expand globally, to have a seasoned professional of his caliber in our ranks is exciting and invaluable.”
