Donald J. Trump's election as the 45th president of the United States has shocked millions of Americans and it has shaken the world

His brash reputation is no secret to the international community, but his complete lack of  public service experience leads many leaders, from Israel to Indonesia, to wonder: what kind of president will he be? It's the ultimate political risk scenario. And it's enough to make a U.S. ally yearn for the simpler times of Brexit.

Eurasia Group's Comparative Analytics expert Catherine Kress suggests that the best way to start looking ahead at the next four years is to look back at the last eight. Here, she provides a snapshot of where political risk is concentrated today, and how it has evolved during the past eight years of leadership under President Barack Obama. The visualization tracks political instability across 73 countries using Eurasia Group's flagship Global Political Risk Index, a measure of state and government stability. Countries are grouped according to their relative ranking in the Index and mapped annually from 2008 to the present day.

No one has a crystal ball, not even us. But as we embark on a new era in geopolitics, looking back can provide a benchmark for how President-elect Donald Trump will shape his foreign policy agenda. How much will he stick to that track record, and how much will he diverge? Only time will tell.
